This week on Ask a Teacher, we answer a question from Toshi in Japan.
本周《名师答疑》节目,我们回答来自日本外志的问题。
Here is the question:
他的问题是:
Hi! How do native English speakers distinguish between "can touch" and "cant touch"?
你好!英语母语者怎么区分"can touch"和"Can’t touch"呢?
They sound the same for me.
这两个我听起来一模一样。
Also "can tell" and "cant tell" "can take" and "cant take" and so on.
还有"can tell" 和 "Can’t tell" 以及"can take" 和 "Can’t take" 等等。
Thank you!
谢谢!
Hi Toshi.Hearing the difference between the positive "can" and the negative "cant" is sometimes tricky, even for native English speakers.
外志,你好。即使对英语母语者来说,听出肯定的"can"和否定的"can’t"之间的区别也是很难的。
But understanding these things can help:
但是理解下面的内容能帮到你:
the difference in vowel sounds
元音发音差异
word stress differences
单词重音区别
and the ending sound in "cant"
“Can’t”的尾音发音
Lets talk about the differences in vowel sounds and word stress together since they are connected.
既然元音发音的区别和单词的重音有联系,那就让我们放在一起来讨论一下。
Here are the sentence examples we will use:
下面是我们要用的句子示例:
I can take you to the place today.
我今天能把你带到这个地方。
I cant take you to the place today.
我今天不能把你带到这个地方。
In the positive phrase "can take," the usual /æ/ in "can" is reduced to something called a schwa.
在肯定短语"can take"中,"can"平常发/æ/的音被弱读成混元音。
The schwa sound is similar to an /ʌ/ sound, but weaker.
混元音类似于/ʌ/这个音,但是更弱一些。
But in the negative phrase "cant take," the word "cant" uses the true /æ/ vowel sound.
但是在否定短语“can’t take”中,“can’t”发的是元音/æ/。
In "cant," the vowel sound is never reduced.
在“can’t”发音时,元音从来不弱读。
This difference in sound is also connected to word stress – how loud and long we say each word in a phrase or sentence.
发音的不同经常和单词的重音有关系,单词重音指的是在一个词组或者句子中每个单词我们要读多长、多大声。
In "can take," the word "take" should be said a little louder and longer than "can."
“can take”中, “take”的发音应该比“can”发的稍微声大些、长一些。
However, in "cant take," the word "cant" should be said a little louder and longer than "take."
但是,在“can’t take”中,“can’t”比“take”的发音要声大些、更长些。
Listen for the vowel and stress differences again in the two phrases:
让我们再来听一遍下面两个短语中的元音和重音的区别:
can take
can take
cant take
Can’t take
Another way to tell the negative and positive forms apart is through something called a glottal stop.
另外一个区分否定和肯定形式的方法是通过喉塞音。
It is a quick stop sound that happens when you close the vocal cords to briefly end the flow of air.
喉塞音是当你关闭声带暂时中断气流时发出的快速暂停声音。
In American English, we use a glottal stop for many sounds, including the ending -t in the shortened words "cant" "wont" and "dont."
美式英语中,我们在很多发音中用到喉塞音,比如缩略词“can’t”、 “won’t”和 “don’t”结尾的发音t。
Now, listen to the examples again and see if you notice all of the differences more easily:
现在,再听一遍这几个例句,看看你是否能够轻易地注意到它们之间所有的区别。
I can take you to the place today.
我今天能把你带到这个地方。
I cant take you to the place today.
我今天不能把你带到这个地方。
At home, you can also try saying these sentences aloud.
在家里,你也可以试着大声读出这些句子。
And thats Ask a Teacher for this week.
