Ladies and gentlemen, the Vice President-elect
Vice President Kamala Harriss husband,Doug Emhoff made history as the first man to hold the role of vice presidential spouse.
Emhoff was by his wifes side when she was being sworn into office as Americas first female Vice President.
This is an enormous step in the quest for gender equality, says Sarah Rowley, assistant professor of History at DePauw University,
but it shows how much remains to be done.
It also indicates how much further we had to go to reach gender equity,
given the fact that this is the first time weve been in this situation,
232 years after the first presidential election, 100 years after 19th Amendment,
and 36 years after the first time that a woman was on a major party presidential or vice presidential ticket.
Emhoff is only the fourth man to be spouse of a major party presidential or vice presidential ticket.
There was the Walter Mondale, Geraldine Ferraro ticket in 1984,
followed by John McCain, Sarah Palin in 2008 and Hillary Clinton, Tim Kaine in 2016.
I was here a year ago.
Emhoff shadows preconceived notions in multiple ways,
says University of New Havens Matthew Schmidt who spoke away to VOA before the inauguration.
Mr. Emhoff is leaving his garden.
Mr. Emhoff is not Christian. Hes Jewish.
That also marks at first.
And of course, you have a marriage. That happens later in life.
That happens after divorce.
That brings children from the mixed family, both racially and religiously together.
In this new family, you have a vice president who becomes Momala.
Momala, Harris says is what her stepchildren call her, mixing "Mom" and "Kamala".
Vice President will be great, but Momala will always be the one that means the most.
On the night Biden was announced the winner of the presidential elections.
Harris tweeted a photo of herself and Emhoff smiling with the caption "Meet the love of my life."
He has really leaned into his familiar role.
His public presence during the campaign has really been one that is highlighted his love for Kamala Harris.
They focus on their love story a lot, and his role as a father as a honey.
Harris and Emhoff met in 2013 and married a year later.
It was Harriss first marriage and Emhoffs second.
His children are in their twenties.
So far, the 56-year old has said little about what issues hell champion as Second Gentleman.
He stepped down as a partner at the law firm DLA Piper,
and is joining Georgetown University law center in Washington as a faculty member this month.
