Harrisonburg, Virginia, population 503078, a small place with a big heart----536300 dollars in one day, that’s how much money was raised during the second annual Great Community Give fund-raising event organized by the Community Foundation in Harrisonburg.
The money was raised entirely online.
Donors had the opportunity to give between sunrise and sunset.
Program officer Amanda Bomfim and other staff members monitored the donations anxiously.
I was feeling very nervous in the beginning.
Our our original goal was 333000 so as you know that’s a lot of money.
And I was anxious because I wanted it to be a success and I wanted all of the nonprofits to to benefit from the Great Community Give.
Foundations executive director Revlan Hill says her neighbors support this mission.
I think everyone wants to do good, you know, you have a sick neighbor, you take them a pie.
You have a need down the street, you try to help.
So the great community, it really is a way for all of us in the community to help do something magnificent together.
You know just as two people are stronger than one, thousands of people in the community are stronger together.
89 local nonprofit organizations signed up for financial help.
The Arts Council of the valley, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and supporting local art, got 27240 dollars in donations.
This community supports the Arts and recognizes that the Arts truly are vital to to a city, to a community because they add to the quality of life and people around here understand that.
Another nonprofit called Our Community Place received 31600 dollars in donations.
另一个名为“Our Community place”的非营利组织收到了31600美元的捐款。
They provide free meals to the homeless as well as nurture and counsel them as they seek jobs.
Anyone in the world is welcome to come in.
We specifically try to serve folks who are either homeless or just struggling with something going on in their life.
So we try to offer services that are useful to them like free meals and hot showers, laundry services, things like that.
We have plenty of people who just come in just to hang out to because they enjoy the fellowship.
The community foundation showcases a great example of people coming together to help their neighbors and how even small donations can add up.
