Welcome to the Voice of America’s News Words.
The streets of Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, were cleaned in a special way in April.
At least 20 workers, equipped with modern machines and chemicals were ordered to fumigate parts of Karachi.
Areas with a large population were first on the list.
The work was done to help contain the spread of the new coronavirus.
To fumigate is to remove and destroy germs, insects, or in this example, viruses.
Smoke, gas or chemicals are used to fumigate buildings, rooms or other areas.
